Safety

From the point of view of MÁV Co., all figures related to safety are of strategic importance. All security issues, control of activities, investigations, education and handling and organization of records connected to the unobstructed railway traffic fall within the competence of the Safety Management of MÁV Co.

Operational Safety

The Safety Management of MÁV Co. has created an action plan to improve the level of operational safety of the railway company, as a result of the continuous and consequent execution of which the number of railway-related accidents has considerably decreased. In case of running trains no fatal accidents have happened in the past five years.

In the past years the railway company laid great emphasis on education and regular technological control in order to decrease the number of accidents during marshalling and to prevent such accidents. As a consequence, the number of such accidents, which in 90% are due to human negligence, has also decreased.

The number of accidents happening in railway crossings has not changed despite of the fact that in 2005, 37 railway crossings were modernized and traffic lights were complemented with barriers. The fact that three-quarters of the accidents happened in secured crossings deserves particular attention.

According to the previous years’ practice, MÁV Co. and the police continue to jointly check people near the most dangerous railway crossings. In 2005, MÁV Co. carried out joint checks at 46 of the highly dangerous crossings for a month. As a consequence, the police took actions against nearly 1000 drivers, mostly because of speeding and ignoring traffic lights.

Security of Property

In 2005, MÁV Co. has spent approximately HUF2.3 billion on security of property and consequently activities in this subject show improvement in 2005 too.

In case of security of freight transported by rail, positive tendencies are shown. The number of crimes committed regarding freight carried has decreased by 11% and the amount of damages has decreased by almost 40% compared to the previous year’s figures.

Security of property in case of the railway company involves occurrence and prevention of damage and theft concerning the tracks, buildings, telecommunications-, security- and power systems, theft of materials and other crimes against property. Nevertheless, remarkable resources need to be allocated to prevent these criminal acts (security activities, installation of property protection equipment, etc.).

As regards safety, the major tasks of the railway company, in close cooperation with the individual business units and subsidiaries, are to preserve the rails of disused industrial railways and to prevent damage of the vehicles and in general.

MÁV Co. took measures to increase the level of guarding activity carried out by MÁV Railway Security Ltd. in order to prevent spoiling of passenger cars by graffiti, mainly at the depots.
